If everyone back home is getting rich without you, read this first.
The fear of missing out is expensive. It is also being sold to you, deliberately, by people who profit when you believe the numbers they post.
A man filming himself in front of a rented house is not proof of property ownership. A screenshot of a bank balance is not proof of a business. A caption about “seven figures a month” is not a financial statement. Social media rewards confidence, not accuracy — and the two are very different things.
What you are watching is a performance. It is edited to remove the parts that would undermine the story: the investor who was never repaid, the project that stalled, the partner who walked away.
Some of the loudest voices online have never run the businesses they describe. They earn from attention, referrals and course sales — not from the ventures they promote. When their income depends on you being impressed, their numbers will always be impressive.
A simple test: if the person telling you about the opportunity is also the person who benefits from you putting money in, you are not hearing advice. You are hearing marketing.
Watch for the person who is all in on promoting a project but has nothing of their own at stake. They front the opportunity to your money while carrying none of the risk. If it collapses, they lose a deal. You lose everything you invested.
Ask the blunt question: how much of your own money is in this, and where is it held? Confident people with real skin in the game answer easily. The others change the subject.
• Ask to see the business, not the lifestyle — a real operation has customers, records and a physical presence.
• Separate the promoter from the deal and see if the numbers still hold.
• Find someone with nothing to gain who can confirm the facts on the ground.
• Be suspicious of urgency. Real opportunities rarely expire in 48 hours.
None of this requires you to be cynical. It requires you to be patient at exactly the moment you feel most rushed.
Independent verification is the cheapest insurance there is. A small cost now beats a large loss later, and it lets you move forward with confidence instead of hope. That is exactly what our verification and oversight work is for.
